MSHI Alumna’s Journey from Public Health to Health Informatics

Shiksha Sigdel, MS (’24) began building a strong foundation in healthcare systems and data analysis by earning an undergraduate degree in public health in Nepal. Recognizing the growing intersection of healthcare and technology, she decided to further her education and enroll in the Master of Science in Health Informatics (MSHI) program at Logan University.

One of the key factors that attracted her to the MSHI program was its online format and flexibility. The program’s structure allows for a tailored learning experience, accommodating different learning styles and schedules. As an H-4 visa holder in the United States, employment opportunities were limited, making education a crucial pathway for personal and academic growth.

“I gained valuable insights into health informatics, including foundational programming skills,” Shiksha said. “These technical competencies serve as a steppingstone for future studies and career development, particularly in transitioning into the tech industry.”

Despite being accustomed to traditional classroom settings, Shiksha said the MSHI program’s online format proved to be highly effective for time management and self-paced learning.

“The faculty provided strong support, and they played an instrumental role in guiding my coursework and research efforts, really reinforcing my passion for independent research,” she said.

Shiksha added that one of the most surprising and rewarding aspects of the program was the capstone project. This opportunity to conduct independent research was both a challenge and an invaluable learning experience, deepening her understanding of real-world informatics applications.

She completed the MSHI program in December 2024. Her goal is to transition into the technology sector. With a keen interest in further studies, research and innovative technology-driven solutions in healthcare, the future holds exciting possibilities.
