Dawn Malone Brings Coaching and Teaching Skills to Logan as MS-SC Instructor

Becoming an instructor for Logan University’s Master of Science in Strength and Conditioning (MS-SC) program gave Dawn Malone, MS, CSCS, RSCC* the opportunity to do her two favorite things: coach and teach.

“I look forward to using my experience training athletes and designing and implementing strength and conditioning programs for colleges and universities to help Logan’s MS-SC students advance their own careers,” Dawn said.

Dawn will teach the Principles of Strength and Conditioning course beginning in September 2022. For the last six years, she served as the associate director of athletic performance at Mizzou where she managed the strength and conditioning program for the women’s basketball, women’s soccer, and the men’s and women’s diving teams. Dawn also worked directly with athletes from the women’s tennis and the men’s and women’s throws programs and supported the school’s Olympic sport teams. In 2021, she had the chance to assist the Nigerian women’s national soccer team toward qualification for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup as a performance coach.

“Being involved with a variety of teams during my time at Mizzou allowed me to see the big picture of all the training models for each athlete, evaluate their unique needs, and provide individualized programming throughout each part of the competitive season,” Dawn said.

She met Brittany Ramirez, DC, MS, LAT, ATC, CCSP, director for Logan’s MS-SC and Master in Sports Science & Rehabilitation (MS-SSR) programs while at Mizzou. Because Dr. Ramirez is the team chiropractor for Mizzou Athletics, Dawn regularly worked with her to ensure her athletes could perform at their best.

“Brittany had asked me to consider becoming an instructor for Logan’s MS-SC program in the past, but time did not allow,” Dawn said. “When I decided to move to Los Angeles, the timing was finally right to take on a new challenge.”

Prior to her role at Mizzou, Dawn was a strength and conditioning intern at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, South Carolina, where she directed the athletic performance program for the men’s tennis team and worked with athletes from the football, volleyball and softball programs. In 2014, she served as a strength and conditioning coach at D1 Training and Therapy where she trained a diverse group of athletes.

She began her career in athletics at Meredith College in Raleigh, North Carolina, as the head strength and conditioning coach as well as the assistant coach for the softball and volleyball programs. At Meredith, she also held her first teaching position: adjunct professor in the school’s Department of Exercise and Sports Science.

“I developed my love of teaching at Meredith,” Dawn said. “I can’t wait to get back into the classroom to build relationships with my new students and serve as a positive role model as they navigate their careers.”

Dawn believes the MS-SC program’s flexibility makes it a great choice for busy students. Offered 100 percent online, coursework can be completed anywhere at any time. She also appreciates its seven-week accelerated format that allows students to finish the program in just one year.

“Logan’s MS-SC offers an incredible opportunity to learn from experienced, well-rounded leaders in the strength and conditioning field,” Dawn said. “The instructors have a vast array of knowledge to teach students the information they need to know as well as how to apply it in real-world settings.”
