Logan Introduces Master’s Degree During Strength and Conditioning National Conference

Last week, Logan University attended the National Strength & Conditioning Association’s (NSCA) National Conference in Orlando, where they met with significant leaders in the industry of strength and conditioning, networked with other universities, and introduced Logan’s brand-new Master of Science in Strength & Conditioning program, coming summer 2022. The one-year, online program will feature a science-based, evidence-informed curriculum developed and taught by industry leaders and prepare graduates to sit for the Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist exam—the gold standard for athletic performance.

In attendance from Logan were: Kimberly Paddock-O’Reilly, DHEd, MBA, MSW, provost; Frank Diaz, EdD, associate provost of curriculum and dean of distance learning; Brittany Ramirez, DC (’15), MS (’18), LAT, ATC, CCSP®, program director for the Master of Science in Strength & Conditioning as well as the Master of Science in Sport Science & Rehabilitation; Leslie Ragus, director of curriculum and content development; Lulu Brinkley, MBA, director of admissions; and Zach Becker, executive external relations officer.

Also in attendance at the conference were several subject matter experts who are working with Dr. Ramirez to build the Master of Science in Strength & Conditioning program, including Scott Bird, a strength and conditioning coach with over 30+ years of experience in collegiate strength and conditioning; Dr. Pat Ivey, associate athletic director of student-athlete health and performance at the University of Louisville; Dr. Bryan Mann, assistant professor of kinesiology and sport sciences and the University of Miami; and Ryan Jackson, director of performance nutrition for the University of Central Florida athletics. In addition to working on the new program, these industry leaders introduced the Logan team to other leaders in the field interested in teaching, providing resources to improve course content, or partnering on internship sites for Logan’s MS-SC students with college, high school and professional teams.

Highlights from the conference included attending Dr. Ivey’s presentation: “From strength coach to …?” and Dr. Mann’s keynote address: “Current Trends in Velocity Based Training.” “Both Drs. Ivey and Mann captivated the room with their presentations and their passion to continue progressing the profession of strength and conditioning and educating S&C coaches,” said Dr. Ramirez.

The Logan team also attended the Council on Accreditation of Strength and Conditioning Education (CASCE) Accreditation Informational Session with Dr. Micki Cuppett, the CASCE consultant overseeing the accreditation process. Because Logan’s new program will be applying for this accreditation in the 2022-2023 academic year, the team also had an individual lunch meeting with Dr. Cuppett to discuss Logan’s curriculum and design format for an online degree. As a peer reviewer for CASCE, Dr. Ramirez will also undergo her training under Dr. Cuppett in September at the NSCA headquarters in Colorado.
