13th Annual Joseph W. Howe Oration in Diagnostic Imaging

Logan University welcomes Vitaly Napadow, PhD, LicAc as the keynote speaker for the 13th Annual Joseph W. Howe Oration in Diagnostic Imaging. The Howe Oration will be livestreamed from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. October 16 at www.logan.edu/live-from-logan/. No registration is required.

Joseph W. Howe, DC, DACBR, Fellow ACCR was instrumental in the evolution of chiropractic radiology as a specialty and helped implement and maintain the highest standards in education, clinical practice and research throughout his long and productive career. Chiropractic radiology helped catalyze chiropractic integration into the modern health care system. The Joseph W. Howe Oration in Diagnostic IMaging is designed to honor his extensive contributions to and achievements in chiropractic radiology.

Dr. Napadow’s presentation is titled “Neuroimaging the pain experience and brain mechanisms of acupuncture efficacy: A 20-year Logan-Martinos collaboration.” In it, Dr. Napadow will detail Logan’s successful 20-year collaboration with researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital, the largest teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, to explore the neuroscience underlying integrative approaches to health care. Norman Kettner, DC, DACBR, FICC, dean of research and professor emeritus of Logan’s Department of Radiology, leads the collaboration for Logan.

Dr. Napadow is an associate professor at the Athinoula A. Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He is also the director of the Center for Integrative Pain NeuroImaging, a division of the Martinos Center. Additionally, Dr. Napadow has been an adjunct faculty member in radiology at Logan since 2005. His relationship with Logan began in 2001 as the first postdoctoral research fellow funded by the Logan-Massachusetts General research collaboration. Dr. Nadadow has more than 140 publications in leading peer-reviewed scientific journals and serves on numerous conference, journal and National Institutes of Health review panels.

During the Howe Oration, Dr. Napadow will be introduced by Bruce Rosen, MD, PhD, director of the Martinos Center, professor of radiology at Harvard Medical School and professor of health science and technology at the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology. For the past 30+ years, Dr. Rosen’s research has focused on the development and application of physiological and functional nuclear magnetic resonance techniques—including the introduction and continued advancement of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)—as well as new approaches to combine fMRI data with information from other modalities such as positron emission tomography (PET), magnetoencephalography (MEG) and noninvasive optical imaging.
