Set Goals.

Whether you’re new to online learning or a seasoned expert, here are tips for making the most of your time and tuition dollars.

Create an Environment for Success.

Identify a quiet spot in your home to set up your virtual classroom. Have everything you need close at hand, including a laptop or desktop computer with appropriate software, high speed internet access, assigned books and materials for each course and headphones or earbuds for listening to lectures and participating in discussions. If you are easily distracted, streaming services like Spotify offer a number of free music channels to help you focus. And consider installing a website blocker on your computer and smartphone to keep you from losing study time to endless social media scrolling.

Manage Your Time.

At the start of every term, review the syllabus and highlight assignment deadlines and test dates. Record them in a printed or digital calendar or planner. Make note of family and work commitments. Schedule time for lectures, reading, homework, discussions and study sessions. Write it down, and reference it daily.

Stay Accountable.

Online learning requires a level of self-discipline. Set personal goals at the beginning of each term. Outline the steps necessary to achieve them, and review your progress every week. If you find yourself falling short, adjust your schedule to best suit your learning style and work and family obligations. Ask family, friends or classmates to help keep you accountable. And, be sure to return the favor.

Get Involved. And Ask for Help.
