Two Paths, One Goal: Logan University’s MSSSR Program

Logan University’s Master of Science in Sports Science & Rehabilitation (MSSSR) program offers two distinct concentrations, allowing students to shape their education around their career goals: exercise physiology and sports rehabilitation.

Students start by mastering fundamental subjects like anatomy, biomechanics, nutrition and injury prevention before customizing their studies through concentration-specific electives.

“The MSSSR program is designed to be flexible while ensuring every student gains a strong foundation in sports rehabilitation science,” said Brittany Ramirez, DC (’15), MS (’18), LAT, ATC, CCSP®, program director for Logan’s MSSSR program. “Whether a student wants to work with elite athletes, help patients recover from injuries or improve general fitness, we give them the tools to succeed.”

Exercise Physiology Concentration

This concentration provides students with the skillset to conduct and interpret physical fitness assessments in order to develop exercise prescriptions for clients who are healthy or have medically controlled diseases. Graduates can pursue certifications such as the Certified Exercise Physiologist from the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the Certified Special Populations Specialist from the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).

Career opportunities within various settings include:

    • Hospitals
    • Rehabilitation centers
    • Corporate wellness programs
    • Sports performance gyms
    • Academic institutions

“Students in the exercise physiology track often go on to work with diverse populations, from personal training clients to individuals managing chronic conditions,” said Dr. Ramirez. “This path is great for those who are passionate about improving the health and fitness in diverse populations.”

Sports Rehabilitation Concentration

This concentration equips students with advanced skills for musculoskeletal injury rehabilitation. This is ideal for professionals to add to their clinical skillsets, advance their knowledge of injury prevention and rehabilitation or want to help athletes recover more efficiently from their injuries. Chiropractors or dual-enrolled chiropractic students are eligible to sit for the Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician® (CCSP®) exam upon graduation.

Career opportunities within various settings include:

    • Sports chiropractor in clinical settings or athletic teams
    • Sports performance or personal training gyms
    • Educational institutions or research

“If you’re passionate about working with athletes and optimizing performance while preventing and treating injuries, the sports rehabilitation concentration is a perfect fit,” said Dr. Ramirez. “It’s hands-on, dynamic and directly applicable to careers in sports medicine and rehabilitation.”

Both concentrations conclude with a 90-hour internship, allowing students to apply their knowledge in a real-world setting tailored to their chosen specialty.

“Our internships give students practical experience, professional mentorship and a clearer vision of their career path,” said Dr. Ramirez. “By the time they graduate, they’re ready to make an impact.”

Selecting the right concentration depends on career aspirations, but both concentrations offer rewarding opportunities in the sports science and rehabilitation field.

“Whichever path students take, the MSSSR program is designed to prepare them for long-term success,” explained Dr. Ramirez. “We want our graduates to leave Logan with confidence, expertise and a career that truly fits their passion.”
