Logan Bachelor of Science Graduate Lands Her Top Choice of Medical School

Emily Hoffman knew from an early age she wanted to be a doctor. “When I was 4 years old, I lost my dad due to a ruptured aneurysm. At that young age, I decided I would be a ‘brain surgeon’ and fix all the dads so this wouldn’t happen to anyone else,” she said.

After months of searching for an undergraduate degree in biology that was not overly broad, she found Logan’s Bachelor of Science in Human Biology program. The class offerings were a perfect fit, offered online for maximum flexibility, and was specific to human biology.

“While the program was challenging at times, I felt supported by all the professors and my advisor, Terra Kneeland,” Emily said. “I also took advantage of the convenient tutoring services Logan offers.”

Emily was particularly nervous about taking Organic Chemistry, as it has a reputation for being a challenging course. However, the instructor, Sarah Luderer, PhD, associate professor created an engaging and manageable curriculum and held weekly Zoom sessions to cover the content. It quickly became one of her favorite classes, and she thrived.

Emily found the student-to-professor ratio of the Human Biology program to be well-aligned. Whenever she had a question or concern, she rarely had to wait more than a few hours before receiving a response from faculty.

Emily also joined other students in establishing a fully online Pre-Health Club. “Logan was wonderful in helping us create this club to connect students working toward careers in medicine, chiropractic, veterinary and other health care paths,” she said. “We were able to meet remotely, offer tips and encourage each other.”

After graduating from Logan in December 2023, she was accepted at her top choice of medical school, Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine in New Jersey, where she is originally from.

Emily is unsure which specialty she will pursue in medical school. She has enjoyed working as a childbirth educator and volunteering in her local hospital’s emergency room.

“As a non-traditional student, I have had many incredible experiences that pull me toward different specialties,” she said. “I am looking forward to medical school and to participating in clinical rotations, which should help me choose a specialty for the future.”
